At Borgess Medical Center or Bronson Methodist Hospital, in 2003, Catherine Kothari's Family Linking Study asked women who just had babies about their moods and stress. They called these women again a few more times over the years to see how they were doing. She found that over 12% of the women became depressed at least once EPDS survey. Of these, 75% did not get any help! This is not good, because there is risk of harm to both mother and baby from depression that is not treated.

The Kalamazoo Perinatal Mood Disorders Task Force was formed within Healthy Babies Healthy Start in 2006. This group started two other studies: The Minority Infant Mortality Initiative Study (MIMI) and the Prenatal Provider Practice Survey. Both studies showed that more work is needed to help women in Kalamazoo County.
